This picture was made in the first summer after I'd moved to America when I was still exploring the new landscape around me.  Each day l'd cycle to work past a gorgeously gnarly old Sycamore tree, so one morning I decided to stop to take a closer look at its seedpods. They felt both familiar and different - chunkier and much more furry — to those I was used to seeing back home in England. A few found their way into this picture.  Out on the flower farm, my favourite Rose had started to flower. I love Rosa 'Lark Ascending' for its soft apricot blooms in an elegant, open shape, which glow when caught by sunlight. I gathered a few stems and walked the gardens, cutting more roses as well as lilies and poppies; there's the still-crumpled petals of Icelandic poppies and the silky champagne Californian poppies. Out in the orchard the young, still unripe fruits of blueberries were beginning to form, so I picked a pocketful and cut stems of a special raspberry vine with silvery leaves.  A new friend took me to favourite places along the coast, where we photographed the scenery and I gathered these seed heads and grasses. The palette for this arrangement was complete and it felt grounding and calming to make and photograph. This one looks beautiful in a natural wooden frame, which picks up on the colours of the roses.
